John Moore. Cumbria.
From April 2010 the UK government introduced the Feed in Tariff. This follows in
the footsteps of successful schemes set up in other European countries such as Germany. The German scheme has resulted in a huge take up of domestic solar panel usage over the last 8 years with well over a million homes now benefiting.
Through the scheme the Germans quickly realised that they could not only substantially reduce their carbon footprint but actually make money from producing and using their own electricity and selling any surplus back to the grid at preferential rates. Other countries such as Denmark and Spain have followed Germany's lead by successfully introducing their own Feed in Tariff's.
The Feed in Tariff also known as "The Clean Energy Cashback Scheme" is a fixed rate payment for every unit of electricity produced by your solar photovoltaic system.
The Government backed scheme introduced on the 1st April 2010 will pay you a tax free sum of 21.0p for each unit (kWh) of electricity generated and is guaranteed for 25 years. The beauty of the scheme is that is is also index linked to inflation thus further protecting you from future electricity price rises. It’s applicable to all systems under 4kW installed before 31st March 2012. Any of your surplus energy that is not used is automatically exported back to the national grid for rates of 3.1p per kWh.
A qualified surveyor from your solar panel supplier will be able to advise you on all these aspects and tell you about the best deals currently available on the market.
Anyone, as long as you have a solar panel installation after 1st April 2010 and before 31st March 2012 you will be eligible for the Feed in Tariff. Providing you have ensured the installation uses Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approved
PV solar panels and has been carried out by a MCS certified solar pv installer.
